Day 7: Favorite Book

Reading has always been one of my favorite "me time" things to do. Prior to having children, most of my free time was spent on reading. I must confess, having 3 children 8 & under has really limited my "me time". Come to think of it, I'm not exactly sure what "me time" is anymore!! lol

A few months ago, one of my blogging buddies (Laurie, Days with Dylan & Cassidy), wrote a post about a book she had discovered while at the library with her 2 little loves. I remember reading that post thinking that the book sounded so familiar. It did sound familiar, because I was told about this particular book from a couple of friends. Hearing about "The Happiness Project", AGAIN, made me click on Laurie's link to see what all the hype was about.

Like many others, I am very HAPPY with my life. I have a wonderful husband, 3 AMAZING little boys, a great job and the most loving & supportive family & friends. But LIFE happens.....and it consumes us....and we are left wondering....WHERE.DID.THE.TIME.GO??!!

I have officially fallen into the "mommy rut". Spreading myself thin, making sure that everyone else's needs are being met.......all the while neglecting my very own needs.......my "me time"!! I am tired, the laundry is backed up, and YES, there is dust on the furniture!! Then, there are the projects IN the house that need to be done & finished......and let's not forget about the projects OUTSIDE too!! T-H-E-R-E......I said it!!!! Remember the balance I spoke about in (Day 0)?? Let's just say....I still haven't found my groove, yet....but I'm ROCKIN'!!

Saying (typing) this out loud, really has me questioning my "TRUE HAPPINESS"! Am I really happy that so many things are left undone & unfinished? Am I really happy that some nights, reading a book before bed to the kids(that just happens to be on that signed contract that I wrote about in Day 2) gets skipped because I am too tired? Am I really happy that I can't seem to discipline myself to stick to a diet/exercise routine? NO.....I am not happy....at all!!

So, here I am, slowly trying to fit some "me time" into my chaotic life. Reading.....again!! It's a start, right?! I was going to give you my very own detailed review of this book, but no 2 "projects" will be the same. Instead I will leave you with the description that I read......that inspired me to start my own Happiness Project.

Day 6: A Random Picture that makes you Happy

I absolutely LOVE this picture!! Scott & I surprised Mason & Elijah by taking them to the WWE Summer Tour @ the Cape Cod Melody Tent last August to end our summer off with a bang. The boys are HUGE wrestling fans! On the way home, the boys kept saying that they cannot wait until Landon is old enough to go to a wrestling event with us. They were so excited to tell Landon about their adventure. And in true brotherly fashion......Mason & Elijah dressed Landon up in his very own John Cena wrestling gear!! I just LOVE how Mason & Elijah INCLUDE Landon in EVERYTHING!! Nothing makes me happier than to see my boys bonding and making brotherly memories!!

Day 5: A Song that Means A lot to You

To this day, every time I hear this song, I can't help but think of Landon and his future. Before Landon turned a year old, I did a post with a video of Landon during the first 6 months of his therapy sessions. If you missed it, you can see it HERE!! This is the song that I chose to play during that video.....the words fit perfectly. Watching Landon during his therapy sessions those first 6 months, was extremely HARD for me (AND LANDON). After having 2 "typical" children, I struggled watching Landon work SO HARD, to do the smallest of things. I remember thinking how unfair it was, that my newborn baby had to push his tiny little body to the point of total fatigue & frustration, just to reach & grasp for a toy. My heart felt so heavy for him (and still does at times). You see, it doesn't end here.....Landon is going to face challenges (MOUNTAINS) his whole life. He is going to do all the things that his friends do, but it is going to take him a little more time with a lot more effort.

Landon tackles each hour long therapy session with such WILL & DETERMINATION! He smiles, he laughs......and he cries a lot too!! Yes, he WILL reach his milestone's....and we will be right by his side celebrating each & every one of them! Each & every achievement is that much sweeter when you know just how much work & effort was put into it. You see, it's not about "what's waiting on the other side"........"it's the CLIMB"!!!

And I apologize for not picking "A Song"....there just happens to be 2 that are near & dear to my heart.

If you visit my blog often, you hear this song as soon as my blog opens, it's the first song on my playlist! And this one is simple.....the lyrics could not be any clearer on "MY WISH" (by Rascal Flatts)......this IS MY WISH for all 3 of my boys!! If this song is playing, you will probably see me smiling & crying at the same time : )

Day 4: A Weird Hobby or Collection

I knew that I would eventually get stumped on one of these posts.....I just didn't expect that it would be so soon. So here is my dilemma...you see....I am not the type of person who likes to collect or save things. You know the saying, "less is more".....well I'm a believer. If you were to ask Scott(the saver of EVERYTHING), he would say that I am a "throw-a way-er"......I beg to differ.....I like to think of myself as a DONATOR!!!! I am forever packing up my truck with "things" and donating them to those in need. If it's in my house, and it is not being used....IT.HAS.TO.GO!!!! I'm not a knick-knack kinda girl!! lol So this post is definitely a challenge!!

However, I do love to read books....and I have many of them......but I wouldn't quite say that I have a book collection. So, I guess the closest I do get to "collecting" would probably be the boys art work. Even if it is a piece of paper with a scribble on it. You would be amazed at what you can see through those scribbles. Each art project is like a masterpiece. You can't get rid of the first, well, because it's the first. It sort of just snowballs after that.....the ~~excuses~~ reasons for keeping them are endless!! I have an art box for each of the boys that is stored away with their memory boxes. Unfortunately, I do not have a picture to show : (

But I will end this post with a picture......the inspiration behind this blog......you see, 2 days ago something significant happened.........I typed my 100th post!!!! YAY!!

Day 3: Photos From Your Wedding

Scott & I were married on August 21, 2004. We had a beautiful outdoor ceremony and were surrounded by our closest family & friends. I haven't looked at these photos in a long time, I love the randomness of this challenge! Mason was our ring bearer......he was 1 month shy of turning 2! I can't believe how tiny he was.....he was Landon's age!! Scott & I didn't quite follow "the order".....yeah, we're rebels like that!! lol

Having 3 boys is like "living" in a candy shop. The energy level in our house is "through the roof"!! I love my boys dearly, but I just can't keep up....NON-STOP energy from the moment they wake up until the moment they go to sleep. Those who know us well, are laughing right now (and saying better you, than me, lol)!! What I would do for just a 1/4 of that energy, lol!!!

Seeing that Scott & I are outnumbered by children, a SCHEDULE is a MUST in our house. We actually had the boys sign a contract agreeing to their schedule.....that's no joke!!! Just trying to stay one step ahead of them, in case they try using the "I forgot" or "I didn't know" line. We went over the schedule in detail, made sure all their questions were answered (CLEARLY) and had them sign their life away!! That schedule is hanging on our kitchen door....as a constant reminder:)

This is why I love the last 1/2 hour before bed time....no video games & no over-stimulation

....just.simple.unwind.and.relax.time!! I love how attentive Mason & Elijah are to Landon......they just love to make him laugh! And I just love watching Landon follow the boys around the house, copying them and climbing the couch to sit & snuggle with them. I really enjoy watching their sibling relationship blossom. *sigh* Memories in the making!!

Day 1: Meaning Behind Your Blog Name

After giving birth to Landon, my emotions were all over the place. I think I experienced emotions I never knew existed. At a time when I was feeling most vulnerable, fear of the unknown took over and cast a dark cloud over those first couple of days. I was searching deep within for the confidence & strength to face the challenges that would lie ahead. And there was the answer, the light I was searching for, right before my eyes.....in "my boys".......

Landon is this little ray of "sunshine", touching the hearts of those lucky enough to meet him. He is this tiny bundle of energy & love, with a smile that could light up any room!

Day 0: (I'm Back!!)

OK, so I have fallen into a bit of a "funk" lately, this past winter has really kicked our "you know what" HARD. There are so many things that I have started but just can't seem to continue, maintain or finish, for that matter. One of those being Landon's video of his 1st year.....if you are wondering right now.....YES, Landon just turned 2 this past February.....SAD, huh?! It seems every time I take 2 steps forward, I fall (at least) 6 steps behind. This is so UNLIKE me!! I am a go-getter, a follow-through-er and someone who functions BEST when I am overly consumed by activity. Crazy, huh?! These are all great.....WHEN you can keep your balance! Sadly, I lost my balance AND my drive to push forward. But, a couple days ago, I managed to sit down and catch up on a few of my blog readings. And there it was, staring me right in the face, SOMEONE, who like me, was grasping with all their might to hold on, before they completely lost total control of that balance we call LIFE, too.

So, here is my desperate attempt to regain control of my "go-getter-ness" & my "follow-through-er-ness"!! And my attempt to jump back on that teeter/totter of life......it WILL get wobbly at times......but my new mission is to keep my feet firmly planted, rock with it, AND TRY not to fall off....(again)!!!

It's Official......

.......Landon is now a member of the TUBE CLUB!!! One week ago today, I sat in the operating room at Children's Hospital Boston, with a medical team of "6", and held my baby boy in my arms as he slowly went to sleep......and.i.was.a.MESS!!! I tried to prepare myself for that day, getting lots of words of encouragement from those who joined the club before us. And I must say, after this experience, I am convinced that you just never get used to it! I held it together until his eyes started to roll behind his head....and then....I lost it! That was the very moment, I realized that I was the one being comforted by "the team". It was such a pathetic sight....and I am glad that it is over!!

Scott & I waited patiently in the waiting room, watching the clock intensely, after all this was "supposed" to be a 10 minute procedure. Twenty-five minutes later we were brought into the recovery room to see our little trooper.

...........Let me back track a bit here............

Landon's surgery was scheduled for 7:30am. We live about 45 minutes south of Boston. However, we had to be at the hospital 1 1/2 hours prior to surgery......6am...which means we had to leave our house by 5am......which means we had to be up @ 4:15am to get ourselves & Landon up & out the door by 5!!! When I went in Landon's room to get him up.......both eyes were SEALED SHUT!!! Yep, total congestion, cough & a runny nose!!! Oh, and did I mention that he had just finished his Augmentin, two days prior, for a double ear infection!! That would make 3 ear infections in 1 month (which means antibiotics for 1 month straight)!!

So to the hospital we go, wondering if they are going to go through with the surgery. When Dr. Lee met with us prior to the surgery, he examined Landon and checked his ears....and wouldn't you know it....another stinkin' ear infection. Poor little guy, just can't catch a break!! Dr. Lee felt that it would be in Landon's best interest if we proceeded with the surgery. Scott & I agreed.

........Fast forward here!!.........

Twenty-five minutes later....why....because of that ear infection!! Apparently, when Dr. Lee made the incision in his right ear....EXPLOSION.....(I won't gross you out with the details)!!! His right ear had to be cleaned & suctioned out well, and sort of took a little more time than originally expected. When we were brought in to see Landon he was awake and out of the crib already, a nurse was holding him and they were watching the construction work out the window. She informed us that that was Landon's preference, and he was very adamant about it!! Seems our little smiley boy awoke from the anesthesia quite fussy & irritable!! It was awful seeing him like that, so uncomfortable:( After some Tylenol, and his milk, we got the thumbs up to go home (about 1 hour later)!! Landon slept the whole way home.....and when we got home.....he was ready to get back to his regular schedule....PLAYTIME!!!

Scott & I noticed some immediate results, definitely a little more sensitive to sound, and tons of babbling. It was as if he LOVED the sound of his own voice!! Over the next couple of days, we also noticed Landon starting to walk with his arms...down....as opposed to walking with his arms up like a zombie. It appears that his balance is much better. And now a week later, we are hearing even more sounds, /m/, /b/, /d/ & /l/'s! He is now saying 5 words clear enough for others to understand: eat (eeeeee, while signing eat), light (liiiiiiii, while pointing up at the light), yes (yeeeaaahhh, while signing yes), up (uuhhh, while signing/pointing up) and Elijah (LiLi, long i) while pointing at Elijah!!! I'm so happy to see the progress in this area and so proud of our little man!!

Landon recently caught another cold and his nose and eyes are runny again. Brought him to the pediatrician for an ear check.....and I am happy to report.....the TUBES are working......they were in place & NO FLUID!!! YEAH!!!

As nervous as I was about this whole procedure, I can honestly say, it is the BEST thing we could have done for Landon. I'm just so sorry that he had to endure all those ear infections this past year.

Happy Belated World Down Syndrome Day 3/21/11

I really wanted to do this post yesterday, but we had such a busy day:( Landon & his brothers represented once again wearing their awareness shirts!! Mason & Elijah love telling people what their shirts mean and why they wear them......in 2 short years, these boys have become Landon's BIGGEST ADVOCATES!! This journey is teaching us a lot as a family. I am so proud of my boys!!

Landon spent the day at daycare/school with his teachers & friends. Landon's school took part in celebrating World Down Syndrome Day......helping to spread awareness for Landon & all his friends that have been blessed with that magical chromosome! They wore blue & yellow, decorated their door with our local support groups logo and wrote all the children's names in sign language. They painted in blue & yellow and colored World Down Syndrome logos, and one very sweet little girl gave hers to Landon!! *sigh* One of Landon's teachers (Becky) made all the children blue & yellow ribbons that they pinned on their shirts and they even sold awareness bracelets!!

WHAT AN AMAZING DAY OF AWARENESS & CELEBRATION!!!!

Thank you Hawthorn Hill Preschool, parents & students for opening your door and your hearts to Landon! You go above & beyond every single day to make sure that Landon always feels like he's part of the Hawthorn Hill Family!! Your dedication & commitment to education & raising Down syndrome awareness is endless. We can't thank you enough for proving that INCLUSION does work!! Day in and day out you continue to break down any preconceived notion or barrier, constantly proving just how much you believe in Landon & his abilities!! But most of all, thank you for giving Landon a solid and positive educational & social foundation.......there is so much hope for Landon's future!!

LANDON'S B-DAY PARTY PICS

A week ago this past Saturday we celebrated Landon's 2nd Birthday (Party)......BOWLING!!! Landon officially turned 2 on Feb. 11th but we had no luck getting a party date any sooner......guess I'll have to plan a little earlier next year!! And although Landon had a restless night sleeping the night before his party.......yes, CROUP decided to rear its ugly head once again.......my little LOVE still managed to put a smile on his face and enjoy his party (with his friends) AND he bowled one heck of a game, to boot!!!! lol

The party was small, a few family members, some old friends & some new (well, not SO new, anymore)........a great time was had by all! At one point after the cake, I found myself just looking around the room feeling REALLY BLESSED to have so many wonderful people in my life. We are 2 years into this journey.........and I wouldn't be where I am today, without the love & support of each & every one of them. Although we were celebrating Landon's 2nd birthday, we were also celebrating so much more......milestone's, achievements, perseverance, strength, family, friends, unconditional love, ACCEPTANCE & LIFE!! Thank you to those who were able to celebrate with us.......and THANK YOU to so many others (family & friends) who have been fueling this journey with LOVE & ACCEPTANCE since the day Landon was born!! We love you all:)

Spring is in the Air

These past 2 days we have had some BEAUTIFUL weather.....59 degrees!! You know the Spring is coming when you wake up to the birds chirping first thing in the morning! Ya know, those same chirping birds that I will most likely come to DISLIKE for waking me up a bit too early in the Spring.....but for now I'll take it!!

Someone else is getting a little spring fever too.......Landon has been practicing his climbing and sliding skills at school so that he can take those skills to the playground!! And this mama.......CANNOT WAIT!!!

TUBE TIME

This past Monday, Landon had his follow up appointment with his ENT. Dr. Lee has been watching Landon closely this past year, it seems Landon likes to walk that fine line, always getting close to maxing out on his fair share of ear infections in one season........but never really reaching that last one. I am going to be honest with you, this has been a REALLY rough winter for Landon (& his brothers). Ear infections, croup & strep throat have hit my 3 little musketeers HARD:( I'm really not sure if we ever went more than one week without an antibiotic in the house!

Landon has been very fortunate up to this point, although he had numerous ear infections, with a little help from those friendly antibiotics, those infections seemed to pass (leaving no residual fluid behind). Apparently he responds well to antibiotics, and Dr. Lee seemed pleased with that. That combined with the fact that Landon has passed every hearing test with flying colors, has bought our little man some time. We have never been concerned that Landon has ever had an issue with hearing......however, lately we have been questioning how CLEARLY he hears. Landon has been doing GREAT with sign language and his signing vocabulary is growing every day. I am so happy that Landon is able to communicate with us through sign language, keeping his frustration to a minimum. However, I can't help but feel that Landon isn't quite as far along "vocally" as he ~~should~~ could be. I know that a speech delay is evident in children with Down syndrome and probably the one area that will need the most long-term work. I am OK with that.

The bottom line is, EVERY season Landon gets A LOT of ear infections. Regardless if the antibiotic works and clears things up, these frequent ear infections are slowly affecting his hearing. After much discussion and total agreement, Dr. Lee, Scott and I feel like this time is very critical for speech, and it is our job to make sure we give Landon every opportunity to hear the words clearly & correctly. Landon's day has finally come, he will soon be joining the "Tube Club". We are currently waiting for a call back from Dr. Lee's office to schedule a surgery date at Children's Hospital of Boston (CHOB).

Although I am 100% OK with the actual surgery itself, I am terrified of putting my little peanut under anesthesia! :(

Happy 2nd Birthday Landon!!!

WOW!! Can you believe it?? Landon is 2, today!! This past year seemed to fly by even faster than the first.....YIKES!! Although it's sad how quickly time goes by, TODAY, I am finding much joy in the place this amazing journey has taken us, so far. And I am feeling very blessed and thankful for this little love who has graced us with his presence.

At 2 years old, Landon..........

~has mastered the 4 point crawl
~can sign over 35 words, without prompting
~is beginning to self-feed (with a spoon)
~is beginning to take sips from a sippy cup & straw
~is FINALLY accepting new tastes and textures
~is officially WALKING more than crawling

~has 8 teeth (the 9th is on its way)......all 4 molars, 2 top front, 2 bottom front

~has learned to climb on the couch (but has yet to find a more graceful way to get down)

~is PRACTICING climbing out of his crib, YIKES!!!:/

~can climb stairs alternating his knees and feet

~LOVES to take baths (and WILL NOT get out, until he is ready)

~LOVES MUSIC (singing and dancing are his favorite things to do)

~enjoys being read to (and is the best page turner)

~ADORES his big brothers (his face just lights up when they walk in the room)

~loves to WRESTLE with his brothers (and pull Elijah's hair)

~gives the best bear hugs and the sweetest and wettest kisses

~knows and points to different parts of his face & body

~can make the living room look like a tornado hit it in 2 seconds flat

~makes the silliest faces to make you laugh (especially when he knows he did something wrong)

~has begun the potty training process..........*sigh*

~IS TOUCHING HEARTS OF THOSE LUCKY ENOUGH TO MEET HIM!!

~then we went to Texas Roadhouse for a birthday dinner (well, we ate for him, lol)...and they did their signature "YEE HAW" for the birthday boy (and he actually sat on the saddle)

~then it was home for our family tradition "Birthday ICE CREAM CAKE" for dessert (and this year, Landon actually touched the cake and licked his fingers......the proof is on his "blue" tongue)!! LOL

~then, of course, it was present time......I think Landon enjoyed the balloon & wrapping paper most!

We will be having Landon's party (with friends & family) next Saturday........BOWLING!! Will post pics of the party then!!! Here is a glimpse of Landon at a bowling party, last year..........cannot wait to see how he does this year:)

Walking, Climbing & Recipes(?)

These past couple of weeks, Landon has been keeping us VERY BUSY!! Ever since I caught him on video taking his "first steps", he has suddenly turned into a WALKING machine!!! lol Much to my surprise, Landon has been spending more time in the vertical position. I wasn't sure how this walking thing was going to go.......a few steps today.......a few more next month!!! NOPE......this little boy just can't get enough of it. He pretty much spends most of his time PRACTICING........and that practice has paid off. I have come to LOVE Landon's little penguin waddle.....and I love how he keeps his hands up near his shoulders to keep his balance. WOW......this was so WORTH waiting for!! We are really starting to see Landon's "personality", you know, the toddler version!! He sure is one determined little boy. If he should fall, no discouragement on his part, he just gets right back up again........and he will keep on going until he masters it!! More video to come!!

It seems Landon isn't going to stop at just walking! The boy is really on the move! We now have a climber, too!! WHOA! For the past 2 weeks when I have gone into Landon's room, I have found him standing up (grunting), and then I noticed him trying to lift his leg on the crib bar(which is on the lowest setting)!! YIKES!! This naughty little boy is now trying to CLIMB out of his crib!! SERIOUSLY??!! THIS EARLY?!
DON'T LOVE that:(

One of my biggest fears is of Landon falling out of his crib. Well, it is a long way down for a little boy who is 20lbs and only 31" long!! It's just a matter of time before he conquers this too!! Ugh! I don't think I am ready to move Landon to a day bed yet. He is only going to be "2" this Friday!!! I just can't see him in a "bed" yet......he would look more like a doll or stuffed animal in it!! lol I am also not ready for him to fall or climb out of a bed and get into lots of other mischief!! YES, he sure is cute......but he sure can be naughty!! After all, he is a boy:) I'm just so afraid of the can of worms that we could be opening! It's just too soon!!

I posted a comment on FB and got lots of feedback. I am still interested in hearing more about what YOU did with your little one(s)!! Please........HELP!! The crib tent cover was suggested too.....I'll have to look more into this! Landon is an explorer AND he is determined. How long will it be before he figures his way out of that too??!! Well I guess it could buy me time, right?!

The reason I am really getting concerned is because this past weekend, Landon was so determined to climb an ottoman at a family birthday party. Once he set his site on the ottoman, he was more determined than ever to conquer it. After about 5 or 6 failed attempts, he put his frustration to good use! YES, the boy succeeded.......and then.....HE WOULDN'T STOP!!! Oh, and did I mention that he can climb onto our couch now.......just wish he could find a more graceful way to get off!! lol

It's very interesting in this world of "delays" that he would be right on track in the terrible two's department! Correction.......he is actually ahead of the game!! lol Although I am very happy for Landon's gross motor explosion.......I am so not ready to have 3 boys on the go!! Boy am I in TROUBLE!!!

Landon's First Steps!!!

Yesterday morning found Landon & I at the pediatrician's office. An awful cough hit Landon hard.......the result......STREP THROAT & CROUP!! Ugh! We were so close to making it through a whole month "sick free"!! Ok, so we'll try this again in February!! And we'll keep our fingers crossed that he at least remains "sick free" until after his 2nd birthday (Feb. 11th)!! If you recall, he wasn't so lucky for his 1st birthday:( Although we got some not-so-good news.......there has to be some GOOD for every not-so-good, right??!! Well my friends, Landon has officially joined the 20+ pound club!! That's right, he weighed in at 20lbs. 11oz!! AND......he did it exactly 2 weeks BEFORE his 2nd birthday!! YEAH!!! BUT......(yes, there is always a BUT in there).....his pediatrician feels that it is best if he remains rear-facing until he gains a few more pounds......ha!......so we are hoping he will face forward by the time he is 3!!! lol Oh well, we are one step closer!!

A few posts ago, I mentioned how Landon has been sporadically taking some independent steps. It always happens so quickly and it has not been easy trying to catch it on film. BUT, (see, there's always a BUT), I have been determined to catch his first steps so that I could share it with everyone. I don't have to tell any of you just how hard Landon has been working to achieve this milestone.......MOST of you already know this. But I know that ALL of you can appreciate his hard work and know what a BIG moment this is for Landon AND for us!! What better way than to share & celebrate this moment than with our closest family & friends!!

Landon DID IT!! He just might be running around the backyard with his brothers this spring!!!

"Happy" Water Therapy

Although the holidays brought lots of chaos, they also brought Landon a much needed break from his busy therapy schedule. We were at a bit of a stand still where water therapy was concerned. When Landon began water therapy, he was very receptive to it. But as time went by, he became quite stubborn and pretty much made his PT work MUCH harder than he did. We tried pretty much everything, turning off the lights, talking softly (to avoid the echo) and keeping his ears covered with a "swim band". It was just enough to pacify Landon into getting in the pool where he would then turn to complete "mush". It was pretty pathetic!! lol

I guess............absence REALLY does make the heart grow fonder!! After a 4 week break from the pool, Landon gave us all a BIG surprise!! Not only did he just tolerate his session......he actually worked (willingly) & ENJOYED it.......with the lights on & no swimband to drown out the sound!!

Note to Self: When times get stressful, take a break, regroup and TRY AGAIN!!

Ds CLINIC!!!

This past Thursday, Scott, Landon & I hit the icy roads and made our way to Children's Hospital Boston for Landon's appointment with the Ds clinic. Landon sees a team of therapists and a pediatrician (all who specialize in Ds) about once every 6-8 months. I guess you could say that Scott & I use this as a "checkpoint" to see how Landon's weekly EI therapies are helping him to achieve different goals and to see if there are any other recommendations that the clinic might have to offer. After all, this clinic is specifically designed for children with Down syndrome.

I am happy to report that Landon did extremely well and Scott & I were able to have some questions that we had, answered. Landon's day went something like this:

Pediatrician:

Landon had his exam with Dr. Davidson and everything looked good overall. She charted his weight/height/head circumference......and GUESS WHAT?? Landon is officially "TOUCHING" the Ds growth chart for weight. He was 19lbs. 11oz. and was in the 1 percentile. lol I'm just so happy his weight issue is heading in the right direction. (Looks like his feeding therapy is working.) His height was in the 10th percentile and his head circumference in the 25th percentile. Dr. Davidson felt that although Landon is on the small side, he is growing in proportion. Yay!! She also gave us a "Follow Up" plan on testing that would be coming up. It helps having it written on a form with all the info in one place. She gave us some highly recommended websites to check out (most that we are already familiar with).

Two areas of focus right now are: speech & walking. Although Landon has 2 ST's a week, I know that this is an area in need of much help. Dr. Davidson recommended the Augmentative Communication Program as additional help in this area. Once we figure out Landon's preferable way of communicating, we can tackle this area more directly. Landon has about 30 signs he uses consistently, we use many different apps on the iPad and he enjoys using picture symbols. Although he is attempting to put his lips together to make sounds, he is having a difficult time following through.

PT:

We met with Priscilla (PT) for about 45 minutes. She pretty much did a therapy session with Landon to see what he could do. As I stated in a previous post, Landon is sporadically taking about 3-4 independent steps now. I like to say that this skill is EMERGING as he is not doing this consistently yet. However, we have been watching Landon's feet closely as it appears that he tends to roll in on his ankles. We have been debating about AFO's with his EI therapists but the con census has always been to let his feet strengthen "naturally". At this point, this thought process remains, seeing Landon is just now spending more time on his feet than on his hands & knees, we need to give him the opportunity to develop on his own. With that said, we will monitor his feet closely over the next couple of months and go from there. Landon has already self-corrected a couple of things in this area......first his right foot turned in, and was later corrected......then it was his left foot, same thing. His feet are now straight when he cruises. We just need to give his ankles a little more time to see if Landon can correct it on his own. With that said, we don't want too much time to go by that could cause any other issues, so we will watch him closely.

Priscilla also noted that Landon would benefit from a lot of sit to stand activities. This will help him to keep his hips aligned in the correct position while strengthen his legs and ankles at the same time. Note taken!! Another thought would be minimal sensory input (via Spio Vest). Only to be used for certain activities. Not an absolute necessity, but another option. If anyone has any input on this vest, please share!!

Dental:

Landon now has 7 teeth and we were informed that an 8th tooth is making its way down. Although Landon's teeth have come in, in random order, they appear to be coming in straight and even. They are slightly jagged on the ends and his molars do have a semi-deep groove. I am pretty faithful in the brushing area and Landon seems to be OK with this. His two front teeth are straight but they appear to be very close together. Possible crowding later on??!! The recommendation at this point is: if & when we choose to offer Landon juice........stay away from apple juice. In liquid form apples are super high in sugar. And because Landon's molars tend to have deep grooves.......stay away from raisins! Because they are sticky in nature as you chew them, they tend to get caught in the grooves which is a very difficult area to brush. INTERESTING!!!

Nutrition:

This is one of the 2 areas (nutrition/speech) that I was a bit disappointed! After giving the nutritionist a run down of Landon's daily feeding schedule and an overview of what he has been doing with the Feeding clinic......there really wasn't any recommendations. Hmmmm!! I'm not really sure if it was because we are doing everything that needs to be done at this time (with Landon's feeding specialist)?? STRANGE!! This session took all of about 15 minutes:(

Speech:

Another disappointment:( After giving the speech therapist a rundown of Landon's services and what he IS and IS NOT doing, there really wasn't any distinct recommendations! Not even confirmation that Dr. Davidson's recommendation of the ACP (augmentative communication program) was a great idea!! WEIRD!! She sat there making "m", "b", "d" and "l" sounds with Landon to see if he would copy her (hmmm, didn't I just tell her that he does not do that??) Landon does make all of those sounds.......when he wants to!!!!

Audiology:

We took a pass on this session, this time around. Landon will see the clinics ENT, Dr. Lee next month (February 14th). It had been a very long morning (about 4 hours) and Landon was getting very hungry & tired. (Mommy & Daddy too:)

Opthamology:

Landon is due for his follow up eye exam next month!! Stay tuned:)

I would like to state that this clinic generally has about 4 different therapists in each area (and 1 pediatrician). However, depending on your appointment date and the cycle rotation of the therapists, you just don't know who you are going to get. Although we were disappointed (this time around with speech and nutrition), we generally have been extremely happy with this clinic. The information provided has always been extremely informative. I still feel very fortunate to live so close to Children's Hospital and I am grateful to the Ds clinic and all that it has to offer!!

SNOW DAY!!

The snow finally made it's way to MA, and we got a decent amount.......enough to cancel school & work.....so we'll take it!! It was nice to have a day off, ALL 5 of us, and just hang out. That doesn't happen very often. I have to say, I LOVE the snow, just not a fan of driving in it. It has snowed about 3 times this winter and EVERY time it did, Landon has been sick:( BUT, that was NOT the case today! Today, I have 3 healthy boys! So we hung out, were lazy, played games, read books, watched movies, had hot chocolate and sweets and, of course, we played in the SNOW!!!

We were a little disappointed earlier this morning as we looked out the window and saw that the plows had actually done their job.........I know, the nerve I have complaining about the streets being plowed!! lol

You see, we live on street that ends in a cul-de-sac, so traffic is minimal. And the street that runs right into our driveway has a GREAT slope (for kids).........to go SLEDDING!!! Well, you can't sled if the streets do not have snow on them! Fortunately, the snow decided that it wasn't ready to part with us and gave us a few more inches. So, we waited until lunch time (when we knew the plow drivers would be taking their lunch) and we ran outside for some fun! TRICKY, huh??!!!

Guess who finally had their very 1st snow day?? And he LOVED it!!

Feeding Update (2)

Someone has been making some semi-great gains in the "feeding" department. Landon is slowly becoming more tolerant of different textures and is a little more open to new table foods. And this mama couldn't be happier!!

For the past two months, each feeding session has begun with a palette of flavors. Landon wasn't all that crazy for the "palette" which generally consists of: chocolate sauce, strawberry sauce, caramel, lemon juice and maple syrup. At the beginning, Landon was very resistant to most of the flavors. But I am happy to say we are having a major breakthrough. Not only is Landon tolerant of "all" the flavors, he actually enjoys many of them. He definitely has his preferences, but he is always willing to impress Miss Chris. So with his handy little chew tube, Landon will dip the tube in the sauce and give it a great big chew (or lick). And on some occasions, Landon feels like the tube is way over rated and reverts back to old faithful.....his hands!! lol

Next on the list was to begin to add in some textures. Honestly, I was so happy that Landon accepted new flavors..........BUT........I thought there was going to be MAJOR resistance to the textures. Well, what do I know, I'm just the "mommy"!!! Not only did Landon "accept" the toothette.........he was chomping on it and dipping it in the palette like it was a lollipop! Say whaaaa???!!! Who's child is this anyway?!

All this practice is really starting to pay off. S-L-O-W-L-Y......but we're moving in the right direction. I am happy to say that Landon's menu is gaining some new items which consist of: veggie stix, cheese curls, Ritz crackers, fishies, graham crackers, pudding, rice krispies and kix cereal!!! Although Landon is tolerant of all of these items.......he is not quite at "consistently" yet. But we are working on it.

Scott & I are constantly offering Landon new foods. But I assure you, Scott & I are "always" put in our place. Landon is the "BOSS" of this feeding thing!!! But like any good boss...........on occasion, they surprise you with a bonus..............and Landon didn't disappoint...........

SILLY BOY!

So, I guess we are starting the New Year off right!! Someone is feeling MUCH better and is back to his silly self:) And I have the proof..............

Landon is finally becoming more of an active participant in role play & imitation. You can pretty much bet, that any time you ask Landon to make a silly face, you will see one of the last 2 faces.....and if you're really lucky, you'll get both:) I must confess, the last pic is one of my favorites........it's not very often you get a really good look at Landon's teeth..........I didn't realize how "BIG" his 2 front teeth are..........they remind me of that gum we used to eat as kids.........CHICKLETS!! lol

Happy New Year (2011) & a Surprise!

I still can't believe that it is a new year.....2011......WOW!! In just a month & half, Landon will be turning 2!! Yikes!! Time sure is flying by! Another year of crazy schedules and of course NEW milestones!! I have been hoping to share one of Landon's latest, but it always happens so quickly, and frankly, I don't want to miss it. It's random, and is done, ONLY when he feels like it. Don't bother asking (that only worked the first time, has happened about 4 now), the boy will be down right defiant!

One day about a week ago, Scott was holding Landon and stood him up on the floor and "told" him to go for a walk......and guess what? HE DID!! He took 4 quick steps and sat down just as quickly! On occasion now, if you tell Landon to go for a walk, he will stand up (in the middle of the floor), get his balance, and take 2 quick steps. It's done at lightning speed, not sure if the camera was in my hand, that I would still be able to capture it. The joke in our house, is Landon is good for 1 a day! I am not one to be defeated so easily..........I will catch it, and I promise I will share!! Words cannot describe the feelings of having a front row seat to this HUGE milestone..........but something tells me, a lot of you already know! It's bittersweet...........just knowing how hard Landon has worked to reach it!! There was a time when I wondered if he would be walking by his second birthday.........POSSIBLY!! But even if he doesn't, he is taking steps in the right direction!! I could not be more proud of my baby boy!!

I am so excited to see what 2011 will bring!

This little munchkin was sleeping by 8:30pm, now that's a late night for him!!

This little boy (Elijah) fought to stay awake (and almost made it), was snoring by 11:45pm! lol

It's 10 minutes to 12...........so I will make this quick! Landon had his chest x-ray this morning and he did such a GREAT job!! Three pictures and he was done.......not even 10 minutes!! An hour later we headed back to the pediatrician's office for the results. One rash is already going away, the other is still around....hoping it will find its way out, tomorrow!! Landon did a little better eating today, not much, but enough to say that he is moving in the right direction.

Chest x-ray........................CLEAR!!!! Yeah! His congestion is fierce and he is definitely uncomfortable:( But he is getting better! Thank you so much for all the well wishes............they worked!! I'm so amazed at how strong his tiny little body is! We feel very blessed!

It's New Year's Eve and we are spending it, together! Went to dinner, First Night and back home for more dancing..........we can't get enough of Michael Jackson!!! lol

Happy New Year, friends...........may it be a HEALTHY one!!! Can't wait to see what 2011 has in store for us all!!

My Poor Baby Boy

So, after a couple of weeks of on again/off again sickness between the 3 boys, this morning found Landon & I at the pediatrician's office. Apparently, Landon's fever was down, but we discovered 2 different rashes on his body. One rash was consistent with ruptured blood vessels from straining when he coughs (upper body), and the other was bright red spots that could possibly be a viral infection. That one was scattered on his body, not specifically contained to one area. His ears looked pink, no fluid, but he has been on "omnicef" for 7 days now, due to possible conjunctivitis and to keep him from catching strep throat from his brothers. Considering he has been on this for 7 days, something else is fighting through it. His throat looked good, but his cough is "evil". Each day starts off with a coughing fit that leaves him gasping for air and eventually spitting up some phlegm.

A blood culture was done, and Landon CLEARLY was not happy, actually, he was pretty pissed off. And he was sure to let everyone in the building know! I can assure you, he is not happy "ALL" the time! Add a bunch of ruptured blood vessels to his face, after that was done:( Blood labs looked good (red down a tiny bit), nothing alarming, oxygen was perfect. There seems to be a rattle in his chest, not exactly consistent with fluid in the lungs. His little body seems to have multiple things going on which apparently is making it difficult to figure out what is going on.

The choice was: a) have all labs done at the pediatrician's office, and an antibiotic (in shot form) or b) have Landon admitted to the hospital for a battery of tests (pretty much what they did in the pedi's office, plus the antibiotic would be administered via IV). We opted for plan "a" so as not to expose Landon to anything else, besides, I am sure the whole IV thing would not have been pretty. Two hours later, no red flags, blood - ok, oxygen - ok, no labored breathing or gasping (unless he has a coughing fit). So we are off to the hospital in the morning for a chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia and will go back to the pediatrician for a re-check. Hopefully 5 days on "azithromycin", will have our baby boy back to his bubbly self!!

Landon managed to eat a yogurt tonight......and kept it down! Still trying to keep the fluids going (he's not feeling that too much). Keeping our fingers crossed that his chest x-ray will be fluid free! Not exactly how we were anticipating starting off the new year!

He did manage to get down a handful of Cheerios today!! It's been a rough 2 weeks...........**SIGH**

Christmas 2010

I'm back, with pics, as promised!! We kicked off our Christmas celebration on Saturday at Mason & Elijah's school "Holiday Celebration". Short & sweet (an hour and a half) of donuts & milk, crafts and a visit from the big guy!! The highlight of this celebration was when we actually left the party, hopped in our car and were ready to exit the school parking lot...........the principal ran outside and waved us down.......apparently, Elijah won the 8ft stocking raffle!! Now is that a happy ending or what??!!

The festivities continued on Sunday with our local Down syndrome support group, 21FrienDS! A fun time was had by all, even those that were feeling under the weather! It was a great turnout! Families who have come together because of our little Christmas "angels", TRUE GIFTS!!! For entertainment, we sang & danced with our local, South Coast Music Together!! What a treat:) Thanks Kim, for giving us another wonderful memory to add to our "memory box"! And it wouldn't be a Christmas party without a special visit from the jolly guy himself, Santa Clause!

On Christmas Eve, the boys made some cookies & pumpkin bread for Santa (yes, Santa LOVES pumpkin bread)!! This year, Landon was able to help his brothers out!!

Tradition is, Christmas Eve is spent with my side of the family and Christmas dinner is spent with Scott's side of the family! Two nights of great food and even better company! This years "~~high~~ low light" of Christmas Eve was Elijah running into the corner of the table and cutting his lip. Not exactly the best way to end the evening:(

Seeing we avoided stitches & the emergency room, we headed home just in time to sprinkle some reindeer food on our lawn, attempt to take a semi-family picture and set the cookies, pumpkin bread & milk out for Santa!

Keeping the kiddos up late on the eve, really paid off on Christmas morning. We all slept in, and when the kids awoke, they quietly watched TV (right beside the tree) and waited ever so patiently for Scott & I to meet them downstairs! What a wonderful present for mommy & daddy!! No wonder Santa was so good to them:)

And finally, the highlight of Christmas evening was Landon determined to join the fun (with Daddy & Mason dancing to the Michael Jackson Experience for the Wii). If you missed our last post, you can watch the video here, it was tons of fun!!

All in all, we had a fabulous Christmas!! We did however have some glitches along the way.........like all 3 boys home from school Christmas week with fevers, strep throat for 2 out of 3 boys and the lost package (by UPS) that had mommy out for 3+ hours on Christmas Eve searching for the most popular toys that only Santa's elves could make!! WINK!!!

But in the end, when you are surrounded by family, friends and lots of love........NOTHING, could ruin Christmas!! Hope yours was a MERRY one too!!!

Happy Holidays, friends!! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with your loved ones. Ours was a "merry" one. I am very short on time this evening as I am tending to my sick little love (yes, Landon's nasty fever is back). I thought I might leave you with a sneak peek of one of the many highlights of our "holiday" week. I promise to be back tomorrow to share some pics with all of you!

Landon has finally figured out a way to stand up without any support........well, maybe with a little bit of Elijah's encouragement!! lol It's funny how he has every opportunity to pull up on his toy, but he chooses to stand up and "stare" at it. And, if he's lucky and, he will actually play with the toy, while standing! He's working on it=)

Landon has been practicing standing for a while now. He started off standing against the wall or couch and once he gained some confidence, he ventured to the middle of the floor and practiced falling backwards on his tooshie!! Once he figured out that he could stand up, there was no stopping him!!

Christmas Party 2010

On Wednesday, Landon had his Christmas party at school. And of course, that meant a visit from the BIG jolly guy himself!! I was wondering how that was going to go, so I decided to stop by his school to see for myself........and to take a few pics, of course!! Landon could not take his eyes off of the jolly guy as he entered the room.

He was even OK with him walking by him ( a few inches away) and even allowed Santa to speak to him from a distance. For a moment there, I was pleasantly surprised that his first meeting was going so well.

UNTIL........he motioned closer to Landon to hand him his present.........he.was.not.having.it!! lol Landon did not shed a tear, however, he made it very clear to Santa that he did not appreciate him trying to invade his space. He sat in the same spot, turned his head, and gave him his grunt of disapproval. I have to admit, it was kind of CUTE=)

Upon realizing he was clearly vertically challenged in comparison to Santa, he turned to Lauren (his OT) for backup!! lol

After ~~opening his present~~ playing with the tissue paper, it was craft time. Landon sat in his seat and proceeded to ~~teach his classmates a lesson in art~~ decorate his bag. lol Clearly, he was having a good time=)

Just seeing my little peanut fully participating in all activities at school, was hands down the BEST present this mommy could ever ask for!!

Feeding Update (1)

Wow, it's already been 4 1/2 weeks since we had our official "Feeding Intervention"!! Last time, I reported our new "game plan" and we are continuing with it........just tweaking it as we go along. Oh yeah, and remember THIS post, when Landon conquered his 1st stage 3 meal.......he hasn't done it since (SURPRISE)! LOL That's OK, the most important thing about that isolated event is the fact that Landon CAN.DO.IT!!

Originally we were suppose to add 2 pediasure's to Landon's feeding schedule, and after a week of trying to fit those in, Landon's teacher's and I have decided that that is nearly IMPOSSIBLE!! We have already battled reflux, and after 3 months of medication, I am happy to say.....Landon has been "spit up" free. However, adding this much more fluid to his diet has slowly brought back the reflux, and that just isn't working for Landon (or me). With much help from Landon's teachers we have played around with his eating schedule over the past couple of weeks to get the most into him without stirring up the reflux. Small steps are the key! Amazingly Landon has been taking his multi-vitamin, straight up!! No masking it or hiding it in any food. We have now worked our way up to 3, six ounce, bottles a day. Those bottles (yes, BOTTLES....remember, I was given strict orders NOT to STRESS Landon out, ha!) are a 1/2 & 1/2 mixture of whole milk and pediasure. Landon was not very accepting of pediasure alone. I am happy to say that this seems to be Landon's "happy medium", and it is working. Just 2 weeks ago I brought Landon to the pediatrician for an ear check (which was clear) due to a bacterial infection, and he weighed in at 19 pounds, 4 ounces........that is almost 1 pound in 4 weeks!! WOOHOO!! That is Landon's BIGGEST weight gain since birth!!! 20lbs........HERE.WE.COME!!!! lol

We have been continuing to do our exercises with a palette of sweet/sour sauces (i.e. fudge, caramel, strawberry sauce, lemon juice, etc.) and we have been dipping his chew tube in the sauce and letting him explore the different tastes. The object is to introduce Landon's palette to a variety of different flavors in hopes that he will be MORE willing to try new things. By approaching it this way, we are allowing Landon to "control" the situation......stress free!! For "homework", we started off having Landon watch Mason & Elijah use the chew tubes (without giving him a turn). I know, sounds cruel!!! If he saw how much fun his brothers were having using these tubes then maybe he would willingly do it on his own. Once he showed interest in the tubes, we would then give him one and have him copy us dipping it in a sauce and putting it in his mouth. SUCCESS!!

Each session always begins with a palette of flavors! The past 2 weeks Landon's feeding specialist (Ms. Chris) would follow the palette with different types of crunchy foods (Kix cereal, graham crackers, veggie sticks, cheese curls and Ritz crackers). I am actually quite impressed with how much easier Landon will transition between the two...........and how accepting he is! Ms. Chris approaches each session very playfully (taking turns) and Landon really seems to enjoy this! Of all the crunchy foods that Landon has been experimenting with, the one that I find he does very well with is the Ritz cracker. When Landon takes a bite of the cracker it breaks immediately into a bunch of pieces. His first reaction is to push the "bigger" piece out of his mouth, but those particular crackers leave tons of crumbs on his tongue that forces him to use his tongue to move the crumbs around to form a bolus for him to swallow. Spitting it out becomes more difficult when it becomes wet (because it sticks to his tongue). The alternative is to give his tongue a good workout by moving the food back and forth until it works its way to the back of his mouth and he eventually swallow it. WOW, never in a million years would I have put that much thought into the art of eating!! LOL Crazy as it sounds, it IS actually working!!

So, I am happy to report that so far, this has been a positive experience, albeit a SLOW one!! But Landon is at least willing to TRY some new things. Landon does continue to mainly eat stage 2 purees, but his menu IS increasing on the textured side! SMALL steps.........hey, I'll take it!!

..........WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH YOU??!!

I think I have officially been put in my place.......and it is NOT the BOSS of this little man! Once again Landon has reminded me that he WILL lead the way.........IN.HIS.OWN.TIME (surely, not mine)!!

Let me explain.............this is the look of VICTORY!!!

AND.........this is what has been CONQUERED.........

YES, you read it correctly, that would be a #3 (as in Stage 3 food, LUMPY and all) in the top right hand corner of that pouch. You know, the one I wrote about this past Friday stating that Landon would have absolutely no part of. Well, tonight I decided to ~~frustrate myself~~ TRY giving Landon a stage 3 food for kicks, just to see what he would do (or should I say, to CONFIRM the fact that I am NOT losing my mind). Ha! I guess that didn't work out in my favor, either!! The nerve this little boy has, WILLINGLY, opening his mouth, bite after bite, until he finished THE.WHOLE.THING!!!! Smiling, YES, smiling the whole time!! No reaction to the change in texture and NO GAGGING!! I am so happy that Scott was there to witness this, to confirm that YES, I am indeed losing my mind!!!! LOL

Of course I am so happy for this HUGE achievement (and you better believe I did a VICTORY dance), BUT, I am still aware that tomorrow is another day! It's a start though!! I offered, he accepted (and did it willingly). Maybe because I approached it without any expectations??!! At any rate, HE DID IT!!!

Well, the sun is shining and Landon just finished his Early Intervention (IFSP) Review. He did a great job and we spent some time setting some new goals for the next 6 months!! There is really nothing I would love to see more than my little peanut running around the backyard with his brothers, this spring!! Anything is POSSIBLE!! (Once again, we passed on the reading of the results.........we know what Landon can do and what he still needs a little work on). He was such a trooper through the whole thing and finished on a smiling note!! I was looking at some videos that we took of Landon over the past week and I came across this one. Keeping with the mood of the day, I thought I would share it with you.

If I didn't know any better, I would have thought that Landon "JUST" found his hands. Either that or he is going to make one heck of a music conductor! You decide=)

Time for Intervention (Feeding Specialist)

I confess, my patience regarding Landon's feeding/weight issues has finally gotten the best of me. I have pretty much exhausted all possibilities and have felt that it was time for an intervention. Landon turned 21 months yesterday and he has only gained 1/2 a pound since his 18 month check up! That's right folks, Landon now weighs a whole whopping 18 1/2 pounds=( FRUSTRATING!! I have been getting tips from other blogs, friends, "professionals" and nothing has seemed to work LONG TERM (or long enough to pacify me)! I am a pretty patient person, but I do have limits!

Landon's pediatrician gave us a referral to a local feeding clinic. Although Landon is an outpatient at Children's Hospital Boston (Down syndrome clinic), it was unanimous that Landon have his initial evaluation done locally (in case he needs to be seen weekly) and he would be seen in Boston at his next clinical in January! That works for me, as traveling 45 minutes once or twice a week just does not fit in to our schedule!

This afternoon we met with a feeding specialist. The events that have led us there are as follows:

- Landon officially dipped off the Down syndrome growth chart (at his 18 month well-visit in which he weighed in at 18 lbs.)

- Landon still eats stage 2 purees......will not give stage 3's the time of day

- Landon has added "MINIMAL" solids to his menu (Gerber cereal bars, cheerios, Gerber cheese curls, toast w/ hummus, cream cheese and a thin layer of peanut butter, pirates booty, a slice of American cheese (on occasion) and yogurt (well, this is still a puree)

- Landon drinks 3 "bottles" of whole milk a day (at 5oz. a shot) I admit, I have issues with him still taking the bottle.

- Landon recently went to the Dr.'s for his flu shot (2 weeks ago) and weighed in at 18 1/2 lbs.

- Landon "WAS" drinking from his honey bear cup/straw and has since decided that he is so over it!

- Landon will drink from a sippy cup......FOR ME.......but will not consistently do so for others.

- We are not really sure if Landon is "chewing" his food or moving it around his mouth (so that it melts) and then swallows it.

So, I am a bit bothered by the whole bottle thing (it's just not part of MY plan, diagnosis or not, I want him off the bottle by the time he is 2) Selfish on my part, YES!! It frustrates me that he will not take the sippy cup consistently since he is quite capable of drinking from it (STUBBORN on his part, MOST DEFINITELY)! I am frustrated that he can eat purees and pieces of toast (crunchy and all) but will not combine the textures or at least be willing to try something new. We have been stuck on this same menu much longer than I expected. If I give Landon a noodle with alfredo sauce, he will suck the sauce off and spit the noodle out. If I give him a french fry dipped in ketchup, he will suck the ketchup off and spit the french fry out. We have tried mashing and small pieces and putting dinners through the food processor. We have tried different textures and different techniques and the list just goes on. Frankly, I'm tired. I'm tired of TRYING!! Maybe I'm the problem!!! Whatever the case may be, in the best interest of Landon...............I.NEED.HELP!!

We met with the feeding specialist today for about an hour and a half. We went over EVERYTHING from Landon's birth to where he is today. I was asked to bring in a bunch of things that Landon eats (and I took that VERY seriously, lol). I brought a little of EVERYTHING from his menu. I even brought in ALL the different "cups" that we have tried to offer him. YES, I was prepared!!

We began with transitioning between the different foods, and don't you know, that little bugger did so like each bite was the same! HA! The consensus has been that Landon tends to "munch" rather than actually "chew" his food. WELL, today he showed signs that he was actually chewing! Surprise, surprise!! Hmmm, maybe the 6 teeth that he now has, is helping! Then we moved on to drinking. Landon generally will drink (unassisted) from his bottle, for me (pretty consistently). But, lately at home (with grandparents) and at school he has been a little naughty boy taking a sip from his bottle and then throwing it across the room. There have been consequences for that (like having his bottle taken away)......thanks Melissa=) But of course the little show off that Landon is, drank his whole bottle (unassisted) for this complete stranger. Ugh! Finally, we moved on to the sippy cup, which he will drink from "the most" consistently but will whip it at your head as equally consistent. Not today my friends, with a little applauding, he drank from that sippy cup and placed it ever so gently on the table after each sip. SERIOUSLY???!!!

The outcome of this meeting was that the feeding specialist felt like Landon was a good candidate for this program. The pros are that he has no health issues (no underlying problems that are preventing him from progressing). Thyroid and Celiac have already been tested for and ruled out. His tongue thrust is not bad, she feels like with some extra prompting techniques used while eating, that she can help him control it better. Now that Landon has teeth, they will help him break down his food a little better (to avoid choking, giving him more confidence in trying new things). She is very confident that Landon will progress (rather quickly) through this program. However, she felt that we need to place Landon's issues in order of importance.

Our first goal will be to get Landon back on the Down syndrome growth chart. Although it is expected that he will be a bit smaller, we do not want to overlook a "potential" problem. It's best that we address this issue now and stay on top of it. We will be adding a liquid multi-vitamin and we will add 2 bottles of pediasure a day. This will require me to adjust MY plan.....if Landon chooses to do this by bottle only......then the bottle it is. The goal is not to stress him out by changing too many things all at once. OK, I'll give him that (well, maybe a little extension)!! Also, Landon eats about 5 containers of Gerber baby food a day with snacks in between his 3 meals (for a total of 5 "meals" a day). She would like us to add an extra container (to make 2) at breakfast. Hopefully, this will help him to pack on a few pounds.

Landon will have his official weigh in next Friday. We will monitor him for one month. And adjust his plan as needed. The feeding specialist will address some minor issues as we go along. To this day, this has been the one area that Landon and I struggle with. Some days it's just so hard when you see him progressing in every other area. You start to wonder if you are missing something........some significant sign that you are overlooking. And yes, I have a HUGE fear of that!

........that's how I have been feeling lately! The days seem to come and go (rather quickly) and the goings on of the day tend to be a blur. After getting the kids to bed at night, I get to have a little ME time. Not very long, but long enough to sit and think about the days events. I'm a bit disappointed that I have been away from my blog for a little while. I feel like I have missed so much. But I have been enjoying catching up these past few days. Thank you to those of you who have continued to stop by and leave comments, and to those of you who have been concerned about my absence and sent me personal messages. YES, we are still here, LIFE has just been keeping us busy these days. And these days just keep getting shorter!! UGH! Too much to do........so little time=(

I am also THANKFUL to another group of women that play such an important role in Landon's life. And today, I think they deserve recognition, and I would like to share with all of you.........their continuous acts of kindness!

I often speak very highly of Landon's EI team (who I blog about on many occasions). Landon continues to make great strides in many different areas. I will be sharing his latest with you all shortly. I'm working on those posts (which are now drafts), SO, I am getting there. Again, too much to do/say.....so little time=( Landon's therapists continue to see him at "school" and the staff at his school have been very open to having them there. And today, this is the new group of women that have me feeling THANKFUL!

Since Landon has been going to "school" full time (since September) he has been making GREAT gains, rather quickly! I know that this will not ALWAYS be the case, but right now, IT IS!! And I could not be happier! Landon's therapists see him for 1 hour every day while he is at school (4 days a week). They have really been trying to work with Landon during the days regular activities, alongside his peers. But the important piece in all of this is that Landon's teachers are all actively taking part in learning about each of his therapies. This way they can continue to work with Landon for the rest of the day/week.

You see, Landon is the first child with Down syndrome to attend this "school". Looking for a daycare for your child is a very stressful task. Looking for a daycare for your child with special needs is stressful x10!! Scott & I decided to send Landon to this school, just like his older brothers. Yes, even though they were not experienced in teaching children with Down syndrome. I guess coming from a family of educators, Scott & I share a true belief in "INCLUSION". There is a part of me that feels that because this school had never taught a child with Down syndrome, they didn't have any preconceived notion or outdated information barriers. They take things one day at a time and allow Landon to lead the way. He does everything that his peers do, and they make accommodations where they are needed, giving Landon the opportunity to reach his fullest potential. And when they are unsure of something, they communicate with me, Landon's EI staff and accept the opportunity to attend workshops to educate themselves.

Last week, Landon's OT, was hosting an "Including Samuel" workshop. She invited myself and the staff at Landon's school to attend and to say a few words on our experience with inclusion. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend that evening (but I have had the opportunity to attend an "Including Samuel" workshop in the past). I did however send a letter (of our experience with Landon and his daycare) that was read following the viewing, to a room full of "mostly" educators. Not quite the same as being there in person, but still having the opportunity to help spread awareness. It was such an inspiring documentary that really gave me HOPE for Landon. I am happy to say that 5 staff members from Landon's school attended this workshop.......on a Tuesday evening, for 2 hours......on their own time!! A very special "thank you" to Melissa for sharing her thoughts on inclusion too!! These women continue to go above and beyond........ EVERY.SINGLE.DAY!! Ever since Landon started going to this school, they have opened their doors and their hearts to our little boy. They have taken interest in learning about Landon, Down syndrome, and any technique or strategy to help him reach his fullest potential.

I am painfully aware that this concern for Landon may not be shared at each level of his educational experience. But right now, we have that! This part of our journey (20 months in) has been very good to us. I am grateful to have this positive experience so early...........because I have been given the opportunity to see the positive outcomes of inclusion, on a daily basis. It does work. And it can be done. The key is communication between all parties involved in our children's care accompanied by the belief that inclusion does and can work.

THANK YOU to the staff at Hawthorn Hill Preschool for believing in Landon and all his possibilities. For not only attending the "Including Samuel" workshop, but for making accommodations for Landon when needed, showing interest in his therapy sessions, for taking the initiative in learning sign language (through the Signing Time DVDs) to communicate with Landon and for passing that knowledge on to his peers so that he can truly feel like he IS included.

The impact that you have on your students is powerful!! You are opening the door to an inclusive education for so many others (with different abilities) that will follow in Landon's path. And you are exposing others to the world of differently abled people. For your willing effort to help spread awareness, we are forever grateful. I can assure you, that you will help to ease the fears of many parents who may be at the beginning of their "journey into the unknown". Landon is lucky to have each and every one of you!

I'm a little disappointed that this being my 1st attempt at the 31 for 21 Ds Awareness Challenge, I did not hold up to my end of the bargain=( For some reason, 5 days have passed, and I just couldn't seem to get a post out there. Not because there was a lack of things to write about (because Lord knows, I have lots to talk about), but rather, life has just kept us busy these last few days. For a split second I actually considered myself a failure but I quickly realized that I didn't FAIL, I have just been out "THERE" spreading awareness rather than "here" on the computer.

This past Sunday (10/10/10.....Happy belated Birthday LC!) we packed the car and headed to Wakefield, MA for the MA Down Syndrome Congress' (MDSC) 14th Annual Buddy Walk (to celebrate and promote the acceptance & inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome). This walk takes place each year in MA to support the more than 5,000 families who have a member with Down syndrome in the Commonwealth. With the money raised, the MDSC can continue to fund important programs and services in the areas of education, research and advocacy for those with Down syndrome.

I am so happy to share that our local support group, 21FrienDS, worked together in raising over $11,000 (and placed 2nd as the top fundraisers) and had over 100 buddies who put on their walking shoes and stepped up for the cause. Truly AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better day. The sun was shining and so were the thousands of families who had come together to help raise awareness and promote the positive contributions that individuals with Down syndrome have to offer their communities. Inspiration everywhere!!! Not only was this day a day for spreading awareness, but it was a day when families & friends came together to CELEBRATE the lives, beauty & spirit of each of these individuals (of all ages) who have been blessed by that extra chromosome.

This year we participated in our 2nd walk. I still can't believe a whole year has passed and that Landon is 20 months old. Landon has been working very hard and has been making such great gains. We are so proud of him. We too have come a very long way as a family. This time last year, we were so afraid of the unknown. But, with the help of some wonderful support programs & services, this year we walked with an abundance of hope for Landon's future!

This year, Landon was joined by "27" of his closest friends and family members walking by his side, sporting a "Landon's Buddy Button". To each and every one of you, THANK YOU, your love & support has no boundaries. This journey would not be the same without you. We know that some of you were unable to attend, we missed you all!! There's always next year, and the year after that, etc=)

There were lots of activities for the kids (face painting, tattoos, etc.). But an exciting moment for the boys was meeting Rachel Coleman, in person!! We are so happy that we were able to take a picture "with" her & Hopkins!! For those of you who don't know who Rachel is, she is a mom to 2 children with special needs and has numerous collections of "sign language" cd's and dvd's (and more). I have mentioned in a previous post regarding speech therapy, that "sign language" is Landon's primary means of communication at this time. Landon is learning signs and communicating more each day, thanks to Rachel and her Signing Time videos!! Mason & Elijah were just super thrilled to meet a "celebrity"!!

Well, guess what?? Rachel wasn't the only one holding "celebrity" status that day, look who else made the list too!!!

Day 7: (31 for 21)...Some Facts & Our Story

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a genetic condition that causes delays in physical and intellectual development. It occurs in approximately one in every 800 live births. Individuals with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46. It is the most frequently occurring chromosomal disorder. Down syndrome is not related to race, nationality, religion or socioeconomic status. The most important fact to know about individuals with Down syndrome is that they are more like others than they are different. (National Assoc. for Down Syndrome)

Cause

Down syndrome is usually caused by an error in cell division called non disjunction. It is not known why this occurs. However, it is known that the error occurs at conception and is not related to anything the mother did during pregnancy. It has been known for some time that the incidence of Down syndrome increases with advancing maternal age. However, 80% of children with Down syndrome are born to women under 35 years of age. (National Assoc. for Down Syndrome)

Pre-natal Diagnosis (National Assoc. for Down Syndrome)

Two types of procedures are available to pregnant women: screening tests and diagnostic tests. The screening tests estimate the risk of the baby having Down syndrome. Diagnostic tests tell whether or not the baby actually has Down syndrome.
Screening Tests

At this time the most commonly used screening test is “The Triple Screen.” This is a combination of three tests that measure quantities of various substances in the blood. These tests are usually done between 15 and 20 weeks of gestation.
Sonograms (ultrasounds) are usually performed in conjunction with other screenings. These can show some physical traits that are helpful in calculating the risk of Down syndrome.
Screening tests do not accurately confirm the diagnosis of Down syndrome. In fact, false positives and false negatives frequently occur.

Three diagnostic tests are currently available:

Amniocentesis is performed between 12 and 20 weeks gestation.
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is conducted between 8 and 12 weeks.
Percutaneous Umbilical Blood Sampling (PUBS) is performed after 20 weeks.

Our Story......

Finding out that we were pregnant for the 3rd time came as a big surprise! A most pleasant surprise! The boys were so excited to have another sibling (although they thought they were getting a sister). My pregnancy started off rather well, this was my first pregnancy that I didn't experience morning sickness. Woo Hoo=) I guess you could say that I pretty much had an "average" textbook pregnancy. Aside from very low iron (which was the case with all 3 pregnancies), a gestational diabetes scare and some minor aches & pains from Landon's positioning, everything was going as it should.

I pretty much agreed to have any non-invasive testing done throughout my pregnancy. I was aware of false positives and such. I did have to have a level 2 ultrasound and genetic counseling during my second pregnancy for what was thought to be spots on the baby's brain. It turned out that those spots were gone before the end of my pregnancy. I remember thinking back then that ultrasounds could be a good thing or a bad thing. Sometimes, they pick up TOO much and we worry for nothing. Having been through that in the past, I didn't let that stop me from doing the same the 3rd time around.

Around 5 months into my pregnancy, I received a call from a Dr. who was filling in for my Dr. while she was on vacation. He was going over the test results from the "Triple Screen Test" and there were elevations. He started shooting off numbers and statistics that didn't really make any sense to me. The most I do remember of that conversation was that I was told that I had a 1:3 risk factor (not diagnosis) for Down syndrome and that I was being scheduled for a Level 2 ultrasound and genetic counseling.

By the time I hung up the phone, I was on the computer googling everything and anything on Ds. My mind was racing and I couldn't think straight. First of all, I thought I was too young (I was only 35), I thought your risk factor was higher if you were over 40 (not that I was that far away). I read for hours. Mostly scary stuff. Medical terminology. Statistics. Then I became defensive. NO. I'm too young. I've been through a level 2 before and everything turned out fine. I feel fine.

A week later, Scott & I, went to the Level 2 Ultrasound. The technician was shocked when we told her our risk factor. There were certain things she was looking for: shorter limbs, excess fluid behind the neck, spots on the heart and a crooked pinky (all markers for Ds). That's right folks, Landon had not 1 marker!! We then ventured over for genetic counseling in which we were given options to more invasive testing to determine whether or not Landon did indeed have Ds. We declined. We were not willing to add any more "risks" to our pregnancy, no matter how small. The bottom line was, we would welcome Landon into this world, however he chose to enter it. I must confess, as much as I had my guard up and thought positive thoughts (considering there were no markers for Ds), something inside me just knew.

"Children with Ds attempt to compensate for their hypotonia, ligamentous laxity, decreased strength and short limbs by developing compensatory movement patterns which, if allowed to persist, often develop into orthopedic and functional problems. The goal of physical therapy is to minimize the development of the compensatory movement patterns that children with DS are prone to develop." (Down Syndrome Quarterly)

"Gait is a primary example. Ligamentous laxity, hypotonia and weakness in the legs lead to lower extremity posturing with hip abduction and external rotation, hyperextension of the knees and pronation and eversion of the feet. Children with DS typically learn to walk with their feet wide apart, their knees stiff and their feet turned out. They do so because hypotonia, ligamentous laxity and weakness make their legs less stable. Locking their knees, widening their base and rotating their feet outward are all strategies to increase stability. The problem is, however, that this is an inefficient gait pattern for walking. The weight is being borne on the medial (inside) borders of the feet, and the feet are designed to have the weight borne on the outside borders. If this pattern is allowed to continue, problems will develop with both the knees and the feet. Walking will become painful, and endurance will be decreased. Physical therapy should begin teaching the child with DS the proper standing posture (i.e., feet positioned under the hips and pointing straight ahead with a slight bend in the knees) when he or she is still very young. With appropriate physical therapy, gait problems can be minimized or avoided." (Down Syndrome Quarterly)

These excerpts coincide with where Landon is at this point in his physical therapy (PT). Since Landon entered Early Intervention (EI) 17 months ago, all of his services have primarily been home based. Scott & I felt that having therapy provided in our home, for Landon, would be less stressful for him. What better way to learn than to be in your own natural environment. If Landon's services were provided in our home, with his things, Scott & I would have the tools to work with Landon at all times.

As Landon is getting older and reaching new milestones, we are realizing that our strategy needs to be changed. We are now realizing that he will benefit MORE if some of his services are received at our local Early Intervention Center. After all, we cannot compete with some of their equipment and their SI room.

Now that Landon is standing and attempting to walk with his "walking toy" (semi-independently), he is now showing signs that he is ready for gait training. And so the fun begins!! Up until this past month or so, Landon has really enjoyed his "land" based therapy. Mostly tolerant of all exercises. But he DID have his moments. And he deserved every one of them. He sure is one hard worker. "Water" based therapy, started off well and then he just wasn't feeling it. I am happy to say that he is slowly bouncing back.

Landon is now venturing over to some new and fun (and some not so fun) equipment. Pictures speak a thousand words!!

As grateful as I am for all of these services that are available to Landon, my heart at times weighs a ton. Moments when happiness & sadness cross paths. I am so happy that Landon is doing so well and making such great gains, but at the same time, I am so sad that his little 18lb. body has to work so hard.

Occupational therapy is an important part of Early Intervention programs for children with Down syndrome. Low muscle tone and loose ligaments at the joints associated with Down syndrome are real challenges to early motor development. With the help of an OT (occupational therapist), a child with Ds can get the help they need to meet those challenges. Occupational therapists and physical therapists work very closely in helping children with Ds to develop gross motor milestones (eg: sitting, crawling, standing & walking). An OT will also work with a child at this stage to promote arm and hand movements that will help lay the foundation for later developing fine motor skills.

At 19 months old, Landon receives 2 OT sessions a week, one hour each. With much hard work on Landon's part and help from his OT, Landon is making great strides in reaching his goals/milestones. For those of you who are not familiar with OT, here are some pics to get an idea of what goes on during these sessions.

Although speech is the most difficult form of communication in children with Down syndrome, more than 95% of children with Down syndrome will use speech as their primary communication system. Most children with Down syndrome understand more language than they can use as a result of specific speech production difficulties. For this reason, learning to sign will help the majority of children to communicate, to show their understanding and reduce their frustration. This leads me to Landon's next form of therapy.....Speech therapy (ST).

Prior to a speech session, Landon's therapist and I would discuss different themes/categories of words to focus on. For example, one week we may focus on things that Landon likes to do. Landon loves to play pass with a ball, toys that play music and he enjoys flipping through the pages of a book. His therapist would then bring a ball, musical toy and a book to his session and would show him the sign for each object that they are using at the time. Over the next couple of weeks, when he has repeatedly been shown the sign to each object, she would then give him a choice of which activity he would like to do. Sometimes Landon will motion towards his choice and on occasion he would make an attempt to sign the object. It's almost like being given vocabulary words for homework. You go over them repeatedly, and then you are tested at the end of the week. The test being, making a choice as to which activity you would like to do. And just like school, each week, your vocabulary words change. It doesn't matter if you get them wrong. Eventually, when you see the word enough times, you learn how to spell it, the right way!! But each week, the words change, and that's how we build on our vocabulary.

With the help of Landon's speech therapist, here is a list of words that Landon is able to sign (some are more consistent than others):

hi, bye, mama, eat, milk, more, all done, book, dog, bath, my turn, music, fish and hat (he is currently attempting to sign "friend")

He also knows the different parts of his body: eyes, nose, mouth, tongue, teeth, hands and feet.

And his all time favorite is signing the "Itsy Bitsy Spider"!!

Although Landon experiences developmental delays, he can learn and do just about ANYTHING that "typical" children do, it just may take him a little longer and he will have to work a little harder. But with lots of love, support and some extra therapeutic services, sometimes that gap in learning can be decreased. On many occasions, I have been told that I was an inspiration to others and given credit for all of my hard work in raising Landon. For me, raising Landon is actually quite easy. Reality is, Landon is doing ALL the hard work. What IS difficult for me, is watching how hard Landon has to work to do the smallest of things. My heart feels so heavy for him at times. I just wish those darn mountains weren't so high sometimes. But with the help of some OT (occupational therapy), PT (physical therapy), ST(speech therapy) and water therapy sessions, and an amazing EI (Early Intervention) team, Landon is getting stronger every day, making some really great gains and proving to be an equal to all of his peers. You see, Landon is MY inspiration!!!

Over the next few days, I'd like to give you a glimpse into Landon's "therapeutic world", to show you just how hard he has been working. To avoid picture overload, I'll break it down by service.

WATER THERAPY

It's October!! And for those of you who are unaware, this month is Down syndrome awareness month!! I am joining many blogging buddy's, all over the world, and stepping up to the challenge, the 31 for 21 Down syndrome Awareness Challenge(see button on sidebar)! Basically, this challenge is to help spread Ds (otherwise known as T21, a 3rd copy of the 21st chromosome) awareness, hence the 21, for the 31 days of the month of October.

I have thought long & hard about how I would like to approach this challenge. Writing about Ds is not a very difficult thing for me to do. However, the whole point of this challenge is to spread awareness. So this got me thinking. You see, I started my blog for lots of reasons. To keep family & friends updated on how Landon was doing, to maybe help a new family with a Down syndrome diagnosis (the same way these blogs helped me), as an outlet for me to express my feelings as I navigate my way along this journey and to show the world that Landon and his friends ARE more alike than different.

This blogging family is a really tight knit family. Moms & dads, who were brought together under very uncertain circumstances, sharing our most vulnerable moments. We laugh together, cry together, grieve together and CELEBRATE together. We celebrate our children. Our children, who brought us together. We live all over the world, communicate via computers, sometimes phone calls and if we are lucky, we get to meet in person. New friendships. These are the gifts that our children have given us.

A few months ago, I decided to network my blog to FaceBook. I was initially hesitant in doing so, I was afraid that "old friends" would feel like I was drowning myself in Landon's diagnosis. Of course, it was much easier putting myself out there with a community of people who were touched by that same magical chromosome. I could shield myself from judgement. Sounds kind of funny now that I write that word, when it is because of that word, "judgement", that I built the confidence to click on "link blog to FB". I wanted my "friends" to meet Landon and get to know him, without passing judgement on him or our life, based on differing perceptions of Down syndrome. Ultimately, I have to believe that my FB friends, are friends because we have a mutual concern for how one another is doing. This is my way of giving back to those who have Down syndrome and those whose lives have been touched by it. This is my attempt at spreading awareness. Spreading awareness to a whole different community of people. People who have not been touched by Down syndrome, yet!!

With that said, FB friends and family, I am asking that YOU, help me with this challenge. You see, you have now officially been touched by someone with Down syndrome too. Whether you have had the honor of meeting Landon in person or if you have been reading my posts, you are learning all about Down syndrome too. So, it is my hope, that you too, will help me with this challenge. How, you are wondering? Simple. I would love to hear some of your questions, thoughts or concerns regarding Down syndrome. Anything. Leaving a comment is a great ice breaker for others to join in on a conversation. I would love for you to visit Landon's blog and link to one of Landon's friends blogs (on the right side of the page, under Our T21 Friends), and visit their page. Read a post or 2. There are many children out there like Landon living life to its fullest. Some really cute kids. Share my blog with some of "your" friends. Maybe talk about children with Down syndrome (or any disability) with YOUR kids. Who knows, our children may go to school together one day. Maybe, just maybe, you or someone you know, may get the news that you/they too will be blessed by an extra chromosome!

Educating ourselves about Down syndrome and sharing that knowledge with others is how we can all take part in helping to spread awareness.

One day.......

......these small steps will be a thing of the past.....

.....but today, I will ENJOY them, one small step at a time!!!

Since Landon started going to "school" full time this month, he has been making some really great gains in many different areas. I am amazed at how quickly he has been learning ALL of these new skills. For about a month and a half now, Landon has enjoyed pulling to stand on his own, every chance he gets. About 2 weeks ago, he started creeping along the coffee table when I would move toys, just out of his reach. He would TRY to pull up on his "learning walker", but he was primarily using his upper body strength as opposed to his legs and he would end up pulling the walker on top of himself. Clearly, Landon would not be defeated. He has continuously been practicing pulling up on the walker, and has finally succeeded.

This past Friday, while I was on the floor playing with Landon, he headed over to his walker, stood up behind it, and took his very first step. Yes, the tears filled my eyes, immediately!!! I was in complete shock. Shocked that it happened at that very moment! Every day, this little boy, simply amazes me ! With extremely "minimal" assistance, Landon began pushing his walker around the coffee table. On occasion, the walker would get ahead of his feet, I would hold it in place until his feet caught up, let it go, and off he went again.....by himself. The music is a bit of a distraction! If you noticed my hand tapping the walker in the video, I was pressing the button to make the music play. If the music should stop, then so shall Landon! lol We are trying to keep him on the carpet for now. He has hit the hardwood floors a couple of times, but he just picks up too much speed.

It's funny how when I look back at Landon's first year, it seemed as though each new skill took months to master. I remember how frustrated I felt. Second guessing if I was giving him all the tools he needed to achieve each new goal. I remember almost 6 months ago, sitting on my floor, with Landon's entire EI team. I remember discussing our goals for Landon, clearly. At that time, the "main" focus was for Landon to start bearing weight on his legs. Something he wanted absolutely NO part of. I remember Scott & I discussing whether or not we wanted to list walking as one of his goals. We actually decided against it, not because we didn't believe that Landon would some day start walking, but rather that we didn't feel that was a "realistic" goal at that time. The bottom line was, IF Landon does walk within 6 months, that would be a huge bonus!! Honestly speaking, if you had asked me 6 months ago, if I thought Landon would be walking by the time he was 2, I probably would have responded, NO! After all, he wasn't cooperating in the bearing weight on his legs department, AT ALL! Why should he have to, after all, he had perfected the commando crawl. The boy could get around=)

I guess my thoughts at the time were based on how long it was taking Landon to learn new skills. But all of a sudden, new skills are popping up more frequently. Is it because he has 2 older brothers? Is it because Landon goes to "school" full time, 4 days a week? Is it because he has a heavy therapeutic schedule 5 days a week? Honestly, I really DO NOT know!! Maybe, this is just simply, Landon's time!!!

I WILL tell you this, I am BEAMING!! I am so happy for my little peanut. For all his hard work. It's the small stuff........the small steps.......that truly are MAJOR accomplishments and are cause for the biggest celebrations!!

Will all new skills emerge as quickly.........maybe........maybe not! But you can bet that walking will be a goal on Landon's next IFSP!! Do I think that there is a possibility that Landon will be walking by 2 years old? YES!! Landon's possibilities are ENDLESS!!!

.......I still can't believe it!! Mason (my oldest) turned 8 today. Where is the time going? Someone, please stop that clock. I can't seem to keep up!!

*sigh* Where do I begin?! After all, Mason, you are mommy & daddy's beginning!! September 24, 2002 @ 2:12pm weighing 7lbs. 6 oz and 20" long, you entered this world (our world). Our journey into parenthood had officially begun! Love, hope, dreams (and fears too), the three of us were in this thing together!! Every "first" we would share, together too.

CHANGE. The past few weeks I've been noticing changes.......BIG changes.......YOU are growing so fast.

You are now in the 3rd grade! And so far, you are off to a very good start. Every year your growth shows. You tackle each project with such will and determination. Frustration, on occasion, accompanies that will & determination but you work through it well. And you are a great problem solver. You have a love for crossword puzzles, word searches and brain teasers. The tougher the problem, the more determined you are to solve it. Hang on to these tools tight, they will get you far in life.

You LOVE to read!! Not surprising from a boy who was reading fluently at age 4. It must have been all the reading mommy & daddy did to you while you were in my belly. As a toddler, you loved books. Flipping through the pages, pointing to pictures and mostly being read to. That love for reading continues to this day. At any given time you can be found lying down on your bed with a good book. Chapter books........already..........you finished the whole Diary of a Wimpy Kid collection last year in the second grade. Now that's a lot of reading!!

You are quiet & shy. You like to warm up to things and people before you jump in. That's OK. It's good to be cautious. Sometimes you struggle with your confidence. You are capable of so many wonderful things! Believe in yourself. You do not have to be the best (at everything), just give your best, to all that you do!

You are very compassionate and sensitive. Two things that are so important in life. As you are getting older, you are starting to realize how fortunate you are. (a truly important life lesson) You are becoming more aware of the world around you. "Giving" is becoming a big part of who you are. At 8 years old, you are realizing how important it is for us to give back to our community and to those who are less fortunate. You have a desire to help those in need. For example, you no longer find it necessary to hang on to all your toys (including the ones you haven't played with for some time). Instead, you rather pack a bag and donate it to children who have never had toys. You now see the greater good!! It fills my heart with so much joy to see the young "boy" you are becoming!! And such great qualities needed to be a true friend. You clearly have no problems there.........you have friends in abundance!! Some that you have had since preschool. Finding your way and place in this world will not always be easy. Surround yourself with family & good friends. And always stay true to YOU!!

You are an AMAZING big brother. Don't get me wrong, you & Elijah definitely have your moments. But hey, that's life. You also share some common grounds. Like wrestling, sports, music and video games. You are a great protector. Always watching out for your little brothers. A job you take seriously now that Elijah goes to the same school as you. And especially with Landon. I pity the fool who even dares to step near that fine line. You are so attentive. It doesn't matter what you are doing, you always have time for your bothers (well, maybe not immediately, but at least within a few seconds. lol). Whether helping Elijah with his homework or playing catch with Landon. You always make it a point to include Landon in everything. Even if it's telling him about something you & Elijah did. It's always followed by, "and some day when you are older, WE are going to......"!! Yes, some day you 3 boys.......*sigh*!! Just makes my heart smile=)

You are such a CLOWN!! You love to make people laugh!! Whether it be magic tricks, jokes or imitation (Urkel, one of your favorites)........you definitely have a sense of humor!

You love sports! Right now you play baseball, soccer & flag football. You have shown such growth in all 3!! I loved watching you play between 4-6 years old, making friends and having so much fun. But I love watching you play even more, now, and how you have learned to become a team player while continuing to have so much fun!! You take constructive criticism well, and put it to good use! This is the key to great success!! A big part of LEARNING!!

Basketball is next on your list!! I guess mommy & daddy shouldn't plan on having a "free" weekend any time soon, huh??!! lol

You love to play video games! Wrestling and basketball are 2 of your favorites right now! At times they seem to abduct you from your family. But we are learning how to fit them in to your busy schedule! Too much of anything is never a "good" thing! Other things you like to do are: baking (but there is far more joy in eating what you bake), playing basketball and riding your bike. You just learned how to "officially" ride your bike (and stop without falling) this past summer. (we will blame that on modern technology and motorized quads). There's no stopping you now=)

lol And, you love to dance!! Maybe some hip hop classes will be added to that list soon!! (FYI: girls love a guy who can dance)!!

Oh Mason, my heart is filled with so much love for you! You see, my journey into parenthood began with you. We share a bond that is indescribable. It's a feeling. Through you, I have experienced many firsts. My first pregnancy. The overwhelming emotions I felt the first time I was called, mama. The pure joy of seeing you take your first steps. And how proud I was of you when you started kindergarten.

For 3 years we enjoyed uninterrupted cuddle time. Countless hugs & kisses. And many "date nights". The list goes on. As our family has grown, our one on one time may not be as often as we would like. But we always manage to share a quiet conversation any "free" chance we get. Those moments may be few but they sure are priceless. Moments when we share our thoughts and our concerns on anything & everything. I just LOVE how free & comfortable our conversations are. May our line of communication always be open. I cherish the bond you & I share. It is my hope, that we always find time to talk and to squeeze a "date night" in to our busy schedules. No matter how old we get.

Happy 8th Birthday my sweet, sweet Mason!! Today is your day. Today we celebrate you and all the joy you bring to our lives. We love you to the moon & back!!

In keeping true to spreading awareness, I felt the need to share this post with all of you. You see, when I had Landon I searched EVERYWHERE for information regarding Down syndrome. It is through this searching that I came across this AMAZING community of people, who openly & willingly, were out there sharing their stories & their BEAUTIFUL children. It took me a few weeks to finally have the courage to start my own blog. That "moment" came when I realized that all of these selfless families took time out of their busy days to share their stories, which in turn HELPED me! I saw the good in blogging, and the amazing effects it had on those who had already embarked on this wonderful journey and for those who were preparing to.

So, here "I" am, SHARING our story, in hopes that I too will be someone else's "moment".

I love watching blogs evolve, a true testament to the experience of personal growth. Looking back at my posts, I too, see my personal growth. At the beginning, I was so unsure of EVERYTHING, I was out there just finding my way on this dark path with lots of forks in the road. Lots of important decisions to make. I'm still unsure of things, but I am happy to say that I have a little more faith in myself. How can I not, when my children DEPEND on me.

We have been so fortunate to have a wonderful support circle and to be surrounded by the most loving & supportive family & friends. Our lives ARE more alike than different which has helped in making all the puzzle pieces fit. Not MUCH has changed after having Landon, although a lot more people's lives have been touched by his presence. Just makes my heart smile=)

Although I have found my place of peace, I am very well aware of the fact that we do not live in a plastic bubble. You see, when Landon was born, I played out lots of scenarios in my head. What will I do/say if someone refers to Landon as "the R word"? How will I handle the staring? You get my point!! So, I drew up this game plan in my mind and had a Plan A, B C, etc.. I felt like I always had to be prepared to handle ANYTHING that came my way. Strategically placed plans for each scenario. I am happy to say that those plans have stayed in the "play book". Don't get me wrong, I have encountered staring on many occasions, sometimes leaving me to feel sad and scared (knowing that this IS part of Landon's future). But I tackle that issue with exposing Landon to everything & everyone! I am proud of who he is, and I want the world to know that. I'm assuming that it is more of a curiosity thing. I just wish people would be more open and ask questions. That works for me!

Two days ago, a person that I knew, did approach me & asked a question. The conversation was going well and then all of a sudden, I found myself.......SPEECHLESS!! (I know those of you who know me well are in complete shock right now. Kelly...speechless.....two words that don't quite fit together). LOL This conversation changed rather quickly when it went from "Landon is absolutely adorable, he is truly mesmerizing", to, "HOW is he doing (with that look of sympathy), is he ABLE to learn?" WHAT??? Are you kidding me? All those witty comebacks and all those plans were NOWHERE to be found. It was just me, this person and this long pause of silence (like an outer body experience). I was searching for words but none were to be found. THOUGHTS, oh yes, thoughts I had. Like my initial thought of "Are you kidding me, you are worried if Landon CAN learn? You've got some learning to do yourself!" I made a quick recovery with all of the wonderful things that Landon IS doing. I kept my composure, ended the conversation and off she went. All of a sudden I was flushed with emotion and I could not stop laughing (to myself of course). What did she think.....Landon was like a stuffed animal or an elf on a shelf that just sits around looking cute and waits for someone to play with it? Seriously?! It was in those moments following that I realized just how far I have come. A year ago, I am sure this would have been a very ugly confrontation and a lot of hurt feelings. Don't get me wrong, it did sting a little bit, but I realized how sorry I felt for this person instead. Sorry that she has not been touched by Down syndrome. And that she will never know what she is missing!! I am slowly starting to realize how to pick & choose my battles. As I quickly replayed the event that had just taken place, I realized that there truly was NO MALICE involved. But I was sadly slapped by reality of how some people are uneducated and misinformed when it comes to Down syndrome. *sigh*

I am proud of myself. Proud of how much I have grown these past 19 months. And I must make sure that my objective stays clear and that I keep my eyes on the ultimate goal. And so with this life lesson and Landon in my heart, I will continue on in my efforts to help spread awareness. EDUCATE! EDUCATE! EDUCATE! This is definitely the key to our children's future!!

First Day of Kindergarten

Yay! It's official, the school year has truly begun, all 3 boys are back in school. Today was Elijah's 1st day of Kindergarten, and boy was he SUPER excited! Last night before he went to bed, we read 3 books about Kindergarten, and Mason & I answered lots of questions. We went over all the ways that kindergarten and preschool are the same and all the ways that they are different. I actually had butterflies in my stomach. Not the "I'm so nervous, I think I'm gonna cry" kind, but the "OMG, watch out Mrs. Sylvia, you're in for one heck of a ride" kind!!! lol

So, we woke up this morning to our good 'ole "SCHEDULE" (I really LOVE that thing)!!! And finally, out the door we went, right around the corner & up the street from our house (a whole minute & a half), to the place that gives me peace of mind while I'm at work all day.........SCHOOL=) Elijah couldn't get out of his car seat fast enough. I of course had to take a few pictures of this BIG DAY!! We then proceeded to the side entrance (where the NEW BIG BOYS & GIRLS will enter their new classroom). We were greeted by lots of excited children and some very sad faces.....parents of course!! Not this mommy, I was just as excited for Elijah as he was for himself! We waited for his teacher to give him his name tag, had a kiss goodbye, and in nothing other than Elijah style, "I" got a hi-five!! Short & sweet, and off my ~~little~~ BIG boy went, through the doors of KNOWLEDGE!! *SIGH*

Looking back I can remember all the anxiety I felt having to go back to work after each of my 3 pregnancies. I always yearned to be a "stay-at-home-mom", unfortunately, that was never in the cards for me. I was however very blessed to have such a GREAT support system and parents/grandparents who were available to babysit. With the exception of Mason, my 1st born (who didn't go to daycare/preschool until he was 3 years old), both Elijah & Landon shared their time (from 3 months of age) between the two. Elijah went 2 days/wk and increased to 4 days/wk (8am - 4pm) when he turned 3. Landon went 2 days/wk and has increased to 4 days/wk (8am - 4pm) this past Tuesday. His therapists now see him @ school. It seems my boys have ALWAYS been in school. At some point the school may change, (some)friends may change and teachers will change. It's exciting for them.......just like replacing an old toy with a new one! Lucky for me, TEARS & SEPARATION, have never been an issue (the boys have always known school to be part of their life). Well, I did cry all the way to work the day Mason started preschool, I was so upset that he waved goodbye to me from across the room as he began playing blocks with a fellow classmate. How DARE he not cry and tell me how much he would miss me!! lol SO, I guess the trade off worked for "me". Well, I can say that now=)

HOORAY! HOORAY!! THE KIDS WENT BACK TO SCHOOL TODAY!!

(Oops, sorry, please excuse me while I try to contain my excitement! Yay! NOPE. It didn't work!!)

Although there is close to 2 weeks left of the summer season, TODAY, my yearning for the fall season assured me that it is right around the corner. Yes, the day the kids go back to school. Summer has never really been, well summer, since 1997 when I started my full time "DAY" job that requires me to work 52 weeks a year. UGH!! It never really bothered me as I was not much of a "beach" kinda gal. But I must confess that it bothers me more now that I am a "MOM", and my kids are in school. You see, during the school year we have a very hectic schedule, but it works for us. There is consistency & predictability!! Then the summer rolls around, and we find ourselves looking into all kinds of activities (which require money), to keep the kids....BUSY!! Let's face it, there is no adult (in their right mind) that actually has the energy to keep up with these kids.....all.day.long. Kids need kids!! It's complete chaos juggling 3 different schedules & shuffling babysitters around so that all the grandparents have the opportunity to spend some time with the kids. For the record, we are very blessed that there is very rarely a time when "a" grandparent is unavailable to babysit and even more blessed that those grandparents are still around to make everlasting memories for us & the boys. That which includes my 92 year old grandmother (who to this day vacations once a year, sometimes twice....... Vegas & Disney, 2 of her favorites and who actually still drives). BLESSED!!!

But today, the day I like to think was dedicated to giving me my sanity back, is here in full force. Hail the SCHEDULE=) We woke up this morning and started this day, which will be referred to as groundhog day, starting tomorrow. It went something like this:

- wake up
- eat breakfast
- get #1 washed while #2 gets dressed
- get #2 washed while #1 gets dressed
- make lunches
- get #3 washed & dressed up
- double check backpacks & lunch boxes
- pack up the car (including 3 kids who are all in car seats.......oldest is in booster, does not meet age, weight or height requirement)

**I'm starting to think we have an "underweight" issue in this house. Clearly not my issue!!**

- drop off #2 & #3 at school first
- drop off #1 at school
- drive myself to work.......definitely, NOT.ON.TIME=/
- work, work, work, work, work
- pick up #1 from school (meet mother-in-law for drop off of #1)
- work, work, work, work, work
- pick up #2 & #3 from school
- homework for #1 (yes, on the first day of school)
- prepare & eat dinner
- bathe #3
- assist in bathing #2
- time #1 in the shower (way too long)
- bedtime #3
- ice cream snack (husband's idea)
- bedtime #1 & #2
- clean up dinner mess
- get backpacks & clothes ready for tomorrow
- BLOG about my day=)

In case you were wondering who was assigned which number:

#1 = Mason (3rd grade) - 1st day of school

#2 Elijah - (kindergarten)

(Elijah has 3 more days at his preschool, and he will start his 1st day of kindergarten, Monday the 13th)

#3 Landon - 1st day of school (Full time in the toddler room)

(this little man will be going to school 4 days/week from 8am-4pm)

The boys all had a wonderful day. Mason was excited to see who was in his class this year (and he was very happy). Elijah is happy that he gets to spend a few more days with his preschool friends (but this boy is bursting at the seams with excitement to start "Big Boy School"). And Landon had a GREAT day. He fully participated in all the toddler activities today. He played with his friends, he ate snack & lunch with his friends, he napped on his big boy mat, like his friends AND he made artwork with his friends. Be still my heart! My little peanut IS growing up!!

All in all it was a HAPPY day! The kids were happy and so was this mama, HAPPY to have her schedule back=)

A Great Way to End the Summer

Hey there! Sorry I haven't been around lately. No excuses! Just simply doing summer things with the boys.......and trying to enjoy as much as possible, considering I work full time.....ALL.YEAR.LONG=( I've been peeking at your blogs, occasionally commenting (when time permits), and it's nice to see that everyone has been enjoying the summer. I know there have been things that have not been enjoyable as well, and believe me, I have had those days too. I have lots to talk about, and I have some drafts that I am currently working on, but I wanted to share our last "hurrah" of the summer.

(I promise that I will be back with an update on Landon and other stuff too=)

Last night, Scott & I, gave Mason & Elijah their joint birthday gift. It was very fitting seeing this event fell smack dab in the middle of BOTH their birthdays. Elijah turned 5 on August 5th and Mason will be turning 8 on September 24th. Our evening began around 5ish last night. Scott & I, and Mason & Elijah took a drive out to Hyannis (which is about 45 minutes away from where we live) to enjoy a nice outdoor dinner, "pier" side @ Spanky's Clam Shack! Dinner was delicious and time with our 2 older boys was once again....way overdue. Last time we had a night out just the "4" of us was back in June (when Mason got out of school), we went to see Walking with Dinosaurs!!! Very fitting that we end the summer off with another "date night"!!

OK, back to our evening!! After dinner, we drove about 4 minutes away to the Cape Cod Melody Tent. At this point we managed to distract the boys from the sign in front that said this:

and told them that we were going to the circus!! I know, how clever of us...........well the tent helped.....geesh!!! When we parked the car, we gave both boys an envelope with their ticket in it! I think these expressions say it all!!

Yes, those expressions were worth it......Mommy took one for the team!!! Confession, I cannot stand wrestling. (Not that I don't have a GREAT appreciation for those who take care of their bodies, lol). BUT, I just can't seem to get past the SWEATINESS!!! Completely grosses me out. Especially when you are sitting close enough to see it land on those a few rows in front of you......NASTY!! Any who, the boys are HUGE fans. I can't tell you how many times I am forced to watch entrances of all their favorite wrestlers. I guess I have to do this repeatedly because I never seem to remember what song goes to what wrestler. NOTE to self, get a notebook and right it down. They enjoy it so much, that they practice their own entrances and come up with very UNIQUE names for themselves. HA!!

Match after match, about 16 professional wrestlers from the WWE had managed to bring such pure joy out of my boys, which in turn, brought pure joy out of this mom & dad!! Mason filled us in on who was who and when we should cheer vs. when we should BOO!! And Elijah was more than happy that Scott & I paid lots of money for him to be able to say the BAD "S" WORD. I guess we should have done our research because we had no idea that the big chant during a wrestling match is "YOU SUCK"!! Yikes!!!

Whew!! Sorry for the picture overload, but the boys insisted that I let you all know, who they got to see. You see, Mason has been bugging us to have a wrestling birthday party.....with an actual wrestler there for entertainment. He really does think BIG!! I guess he will have to settle for seeing a bunch of professional wrestlers at a WWE event sitting 13 rows away! I think he was OK with that. There were 4 more, uh, wrestlers (if that's what you call them), that DID NOT make this post. Mommy just couldn't get the camera to work when the "Ladies" came out. LOL Sorry Daddy, just like we tell the boys, "at least you got to see them in person"!!

It was a wonderful & very late evening for Mason & Elijah. The show didn't end until 10:30pm and we still had to drive 45 minutes home!

Yes friends, we splurged & let the "boys be boys"!! An outrageous amount of money later, the boys were representing their favorite wrestler, John Cena, who just happened to NOT be there!! Oops, him and a bunch of other BIG name wrestlers will be in Boston tonight!! Another 45 minute drive in the other direction. Maybe next year!!!

Side note: While at the event, my very observant (almost 8 year old) had his Down syndrome radar on. He was sure to point out at least 2 of the 5 young adults that were there enjoying the event too. Just another thing to add to the list of "fun & normal" things that these 3 brothers will enjoy doing together. Mason & Elijah are very excited for Landon to accompany us when he is older. Landon may not have attended this event with us, but the boys could not wait until this morning to tell Landon all about it. Looks like Landon jumped on the John Cena band wagon too!! Silly boys......gotta LOVE them=)
